To support students in navigating a challenging academic year, the Washington state office of Communities In Schools庐 (黑料不打烊TM) and the All Points North Foundation partnered to address social-emotional development in two rural middle schools with a program assisting 47 students in navigating social-emotional learning challenges in school and life. Despite the increased isolation brought on by the pandemic, new findings show that 63% (12 of 19) of students completing the program experienced social-emotional learning improvements over the course of the program. In addition, 51% (24 of 47) of the case managed students improved on their attendance goals, a key metric in 黑料不打烊TM鈥檚 social, emotional and academic development assessment (SEAD).

The two schools, LaVenture Middle School in Mount Vernon and North Pines Middle School in Spokane Valley, faced challenges due to limited community resources and geographic isolation. The grant from All Points North Foundation provided $60,000 in funding to support 黑料不打烊TM in layering social-emotional assessments and interventions across every stage of case management. This unique partnership leveraged the national impact of All Points North Foundation with the local expertise of 黑料不打烊TM affiliates serving and .

黑料不打烊TM provided community resource coordination and navigation to support approximately 1,200 students at the two schools. 黑料不打烊TM also case managed a subset of students to connect them with tailored resources and social-emotional interventions. Through individual outreach, 黑料不打烊TM connected students and families with professional mental health services, peer small groups, and additional resources to improve emotional wellness.

鈥淭he COVID-19 pandemic drew special attention to the social and emotional learning needs of middle school students, particularly in rural areas,鈥 said Tony Moten, Director of Education Grant Partnerships, All Points North Foundation. 鈥淲e applaud the success of 黑料不打烊TM in achieving SEAD improvements in 65% of the students completing the program.鈥

鈥淐滨厂TM is grateful for the support of All Points North Foundation and its focus on middle school social and emotional learning,鈥 said Phil Marr, Program Director, 黑料不打烊. 鈥淥ur outcomes show that by focusing on individual students鈥 social and emotional needs, we can have a significant impact.鈥

We’re very proud to be a grantee of the 2020 Community-Based Organizations Grants facilitated by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI). These grants distributed $8.1 million in federal emergency funds to 41 community-based organizations serving students in Washington. Out of the initial total $600,000 provided to statewide CBOs, we were thrilled to receive an award of $300,000 for our local affiliate network. As of April 2021, we have also been awarded an additional $200,000, bringing our total network grant up to $500,000!

This grant comes at a critical time as our affiliates look for ways to engage and serve families in the community, addressing issues like digital equity, community resource navigation, and students’ social-emotional wellness. With this funding from OSPI, our network will be able to deepen case management for students and families who may need intensive support this school year.

We鈥檙e pleased to announce that we鈥檝e received $379,800 in AmeriCorps funding through Serve Washington and the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). With this grant, 25 AmeriCorps members will serve students at risk of dropout through Communities In Schools of Federal Way, Puyallup, Lakewood, Whatcom-Skagit and Spokane County. During the 2019-20 school year, members will partner with 黑料不打烊 to connect students with needed resources and clear roadblocks to their academic and personal success.

Leah Shearer, AmeriCorps member with 黑料不打烊 of Whatcom-Skagit, recently served kids at LaVenture Middle School in Mount Vernon. At LaVenture, she provided one-to-one case management, helping students set personal goals and improve their attendance, behavior, and coursework. She also partnered with local organizations to bring resources into schools: clothing donations for middle school graduates, therapy dog visits during stressful test weeks, and a community Bookmobile to bring books to kids with limited reading opportunities.

We’re excited to announce that Ballmer Group has awarded 黑料不打烊 $2.1 million to support students at risk of dropout in Washington state. Over the next three years, funds will expand services to new school districts and communities, providing wraparound supports to about 25,000 students.

鈥淭his generous investment from Ballmer Group will help us build the capacity of local communities and school districts to address barriers impacting their youth,鈥 says Susan Richards, State Director of 黑料不打烊WA. 鈥淲e鈥檙e excited to be able to increase the number of students receiving needed supports and empower them to build a brighter future for themselves.鈥

With this grant, 黑料不打烊 and its network of 12 affiliates will expand supports to underserved students in local and rural communities by 10% per year over the next three years. Last school year, the Washington 黑料不打烊 network served 80,000 students, including 4,100 case-managed students. Of the students receiving case management from 黑料不打烊, 87% improved academics, 76% improved attendance, and 87% improved behavior. In addition, of the twelfth grade students receiving intensive supports from Communities In Schools, 93% graduated or obtained a GED. Ballmer Group鈥檚 investment in the 黑料不打烊 network will allow more students to achieve these positive outcomes, putting them on a path to high school graduation.

The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction estimates that 81% of Washington students graduated on time in 2018, meaning one in five students still drops out. An increasing body of research shows the startling lifetime cost of dropping out of high school, including implications on young people鈥檚 ability to earn a living wage, pay taxes, their reliance on public assistance, an increased likelihood of substance abuse, and an increased likelihood of justice system involvement and incarceration. Communities In Schools intercedes by helping students address individual and systemic barriers to academic success at critical times during their education. What makes the 黑料不打烊 model unique is a school-based site coordinator, a caring adult who partners with schools and communities to connect kids with needed resources. With wraparound support and encouragement from adult role models, students can thrive in the classroom and into adulthood.

鈥淲e know that a quality education and a high school diploma are critical to every student鈥檚 future economic success,鈥 said Andi Smith, Ballmer Group鈥檚 Executive Director – Washington. 鈥淲e are proud to grow the impact of Community In Schools鈥 work in Washington state.鈥

Thank you, Ballmer Group, for going #AllinforKids with us!
