This grant will put 25 AmeriCorps members on the ground to serve with nine of our local Communities In Schools affiliate organizations. AmeriCorps members will tackle some of the toughest problems in Washington including helping students to stay in school and remain on track to graduate. CNCS will provide an additional $148,000 in Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards for the AmeriCorps members funded by these grants. After completing a full term of service, AmeriCorps members receive an award of approximately $6,000 that they can use to pay for college or to pay off student loans.

Every year, 75,000 AmeriCorps members serve through 21,000 schools, nonprofits, and community and faith-based organizations across the country. These citizens have played a critical role in the recovery of communities affected by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria. They also tutor and mentor young people, connect veterans to jobs, care for seniors, reduce crime and revive cities, fight the opioid epidemic, and meet other critical needs.

Communities In Schools (黑料不打烊) has announced a five-year, $15 million grant from the Ballmer Group in support of its work to keep at-risk students in school.

The unrestricted grant will support 黑料不打烊’s efforts to serve, on an annual basis, nearly 1.5 million students in twenty-three hundred district and charter schools in twenty-five states and the District of Columbia. Working in schools with a school-based coordinator, 黑料不打烊 assesses a school’s needs in the area of dropout prevention, develops a plan, and directs community resources to address the academic and non-academic needs of students and their families.

During the 2015-16 school year, the organization helped 99 percent of case-managed students stay in school and 91 percent of eligible seniors graduate.

By working inside schools, our staff can connect them with community services so they can succeed in school and life.
